Reading researchers have learned that metacognition, awareness about thinking, develops better thinking skills. If students learn to think about their thinking, they will be more assured that their answers are correct.

How do students learn to concentrate, especially in a busy classroom with many distractions? A teacher can guide reading activities, asking students to predict the action of the story, to develop questions, to check if predictions are accurate, and at the end, to summarize and draw conclusions. Students who learn this reading pattern develop a framework for thinking about a story.

ACCOMPLISH READING PROGRAM can induce students to think about thinking as they sit at their computer. The reason it can do this is because a computer can manipulate information. Learning to think about thinking is expedient.

In Accomplish, computer “wait time” is when the computer pauses for 10 seconds. This occurs when a student incorrectly answers a question. The purpose is to make students think about their thinking.

Also, the computer allows immediate reinforcement. After answering a question, students know immediately whether the answer is correct. If they answered incorrectly, they realize (an awareness) that they need to think carefully before answering a question.

Finally, after a student reads a paragraph, it disappears. The student must remember information to correctly answer the question. This sets up an opportunity for memory improvement.

Good readers make sure that everything makes sense. Sometimes, however, they don't fully understand the complete meaning. Good readers, however, develop an awareness that they don't understand- that it doesn't quite make sense. Because they are aware of their mistakes, they begin to re-read in order to fully understand.

Anyone can learn to develop this awareness. It's based on active reading strategies. By rereading, readers make sure that the meaning makes sense. New information must correspond to what a reader knows about the world. It also has to follow previous story content.
